One in four adults over 65 falls each year, and most of those falls happen at home. The good news: the majority are preventable with a weekend's worth of small changes.
The ten highest-impact fixes
1. Grab bars in the shower and next to the toilet — not suction, screwed into a stud.
2. A non-slip bath mat inside the tub and a bath bench for anyone unsteady.
3. Motion-activated night lights in the bedroom, hallway, and bathroom.
4. Remove throw rugs. All of them. Yes, even that one.
5. Tack down or remove any exposed cords near walking paths.
6. A sturdy handrail on both sides of every staircase.
7. Reachable everyday items in the kitchen — nothing important above shoulder height.
8. A phone or medical alert within arm's reach of the bed, chair, and shower.
9. Non-slip footwear indoors (real shoes, not socks).
