Dementia at home: creating a calm, safe daily rhythm

For someone living with dementia, the world can feel unpredictable minute to minute. A steady daily rhythm is one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce anxiety, sundowning, and agitation — and it costs nothing.

Anchor the day with three fixed points

Wake, main meal, and bedtime at the same times every single day. Everything else can flex around those anchors. The brain that can no longer track time can still track pattern.

Lower the environmental volume

TVs in the background, multiple people talking, harsh overhead lighting — these all amplify confusion. Softer light, one conversation at a time, and quieter rooms make an enormous difference.

Plan for sundowning before it starts

If late afternoon is hard, that's the hour to have the caregiver present, the shades drawn, calming music on, and a familiar activity ready. You're not reacting; you're getting ahead of it.
